Greetings My Brothers and Sisters in Christ!
On Sunday, I opened my heart to you and shared what God has placed heavy within my spirit over the past couple of months — Jesus’ longing for unity within the body; more specifically, what the church’s role should be in bringing unity between races within the body of Christ.
In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “It is appalling that the most segregated hour of Christian America is eleven o’clock on Sunday morning...”. Now, almost 60 years later, not much has changed. But not to get sidetracked, isolated worship is a mere by-product of the real problem in the Church today. The real problem, the source of the ache in the center of my heart, is the lingering vestiges of slavery, Jim Crow, inequality, injustice, and discrimination which have bred anger, resentment, bitterness, distrust, hostility, separation, and an even more acute racial divide.
Well, it’s time to make that change!! Indeed, it’s past time!! It’s time to tear down walls and build up relationships. It’s time to work through differences and lift up commonalities. By whatever means necessary WE MUST UNITE with our Caucasian and Hispanic Christian brothers and sisters! The Church doesn’t have the solution. WE ARE THE SOLUTION!
On Sunday I will continue dealing with the issue of racism and how we MUST address it. I am on tiptoe anticipation awaiting to see how God is going to use us as we confront the problem of race in our city. Please pray for me, and join me, as I follow the lead of the Holy Spirit in working to overcome this schism of racism in the body of Believers and in our community.
As I close, please reflect on these words: “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! (Psalm 133:1 NIV) Jesus prayed for it. It is our responsibility to achieve it!
Peace & Love,
John L. Brooks
